Kangra is a city and a municipal council in Kangra district now in Indian state of Himachal Pradesh.Historically it was known as Nagarkot.Kangra is a composite word made out of Kaann (meaning ear) + gaddha (create/mold). This name was given to Kangra because of thefamous ancient plastic surgeons of the region who were known toprovide plastic surgery for royals who wanted to improve their looks and warriors who had lost facial features during wars.
Transport
Kangra town is reached by Gaggal Airport (IATA airport code DHM) about 10 km to the town's north. The town is also reached by Kangra Valley Railway line from Pathankot 94 km away.
Climate
Kangra district is having a topography that some of the parts like Milawan at 400 m altitude,while area of Bara Bhangal are at the altitude of 5500 m. Indora block of Kangra district falls in sub-humid sub-tropical zonewhere annual precipitation works out about 1000 mm and mean temperature of about 24°C,Dehragopipur and Nurpur blocks fall under humid sub-tropical zone where the annual rainfall is between 900–2350 mm andmean temperature about 2° to 24°C.Palampur and Dharamsala fall under wet temperate zone where the temperature ranges from 15 to 19°C and annual rainfall is about2500 mm. (avg. of last fifty five years). Other parts of the Kangra district fall under hill area where the mean annualtemperature varies from 13 to 20°C and annual rainfall is 1800– 3000 mm. The winter lasts from mid-December to mid-February,during which the temperature ranges from 0 to 20 °C. The winds cause winter rains.Summers last from April until June, and are hot (temp 25 to 38 °C) and dry.They are generally followed by a wet monsoon which ends in autumn.
Famous places
Kangra valley is one of the most picturesque, green and luxuriant valleys of lower Himalayas sheltered by the sublime Dhauladhar range. This is one of the most important and famous districts of Himachal Pradesh due to its popularity. Kangra is mainly famous for its natural beauty and tea gardens. Number of people visit here every year.
Kangra Fort
The Kangra Fort was built by the royal Rajput family of Kangra State (the Katoch dynasty), which traces its origins to the ancient Trigarta Kingdom, mentioned in the Mahabharata epic. It is the largest fort in the Himalayas and probably the oldest dated fort in India. The fort of Kangra resisted Akbar’s siege in 1615.
Masroor Rock Cut Temple
It also known as Himalayan Pyramids and wonder of the world for being likely contender for the UNESCO World Heritage Site.The Masroor Rock Cut Temple or Himalayan Pyramid is a complex of temples located in Masroor (or Masrur) in Kangra Valley, which is 40 kilometres (25 mi) from Kangra city in Kangra district of the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh. It is now known as 'Thakurwada', meaning "Vaishnavite temples". It is a complex of monolithic rock cut temples,in shikhara (raising tower) style of classical Indian architectural style, dated by art historians to 6–8th centuries.

It has an average elevation of 2,082 metres (6,831 feet).It is situated on the Dhauladhar Range, whose highest peak, "Hanuman Ka Tibba", at about 5,639 metres (18,500 feet), lies just behind it."Bhagsunag temple" is there.A beautiful waterfall, well worth visiting, is located about a 20-minute walk from the Bhagsu temple.
Dal Lake
Dal Lake is a small mid-altitude lake (1,775 meters above sea level) situated at a distance of 11 kilometers away from Dharamshala near the village of Tota Rani on Macleodganj Naddi road in Kangra district Himachal Pradesh).Dal Lake is 2 KM walk westwards from MacLeodganj bazaar. Nestling amidst lush green forests of deodar trees, the Dal Lake is famous for its scenic beauty and pilgrimage center. The area around Dal Lake is a natural paradise. The area of the lake is around one hectare (i.e. 10,000 square meters). On the bank of Dal Lake a famous Lord Shiva temple is located,which is considered to be very sacred and as old as 200 years. According to one legend a sage named Durvasa prayed to Lord Shiva here.
